Starlink makes it pretty easy to switch between the Global and Regional Roam plans. Let’s say you typically only travel with Starlink in the US, but you have an upcoming trip to South America. You can switch to Global Roam to be able to use your dish outside of North America, and then switch back to the cheaper Regional plan when you return.
To switch between Global and Regional, log in to your Starlink.com account portal. Click Manage next to your Roam plan. Then click Change Service Plan. Choose between Regional, Global, and even the entry-level Maritime plan if you need to use Starlink at sea.
Restrictions With Starlink Roam
The two month restriction remains in place for both Starlink Roam plans. Starlink says that users who stay in one country for more than 2 months will need to update their registered address:
3.3 Limitation and Requirements for Starlink Roaming Users. Starlink Roaming Services is a consumer product only and is not available for purchase or use by commercial, enterprise, or governmental users. If you use Starlink Roaming Services for more than two months in a country that is different than your shipping address, Starlink may require you to move your registered address to your new location. Starlink does not guarantee when or where Starlink Roaming Services will be available. Starlink Roaming Services are dependent on many factors, including obtaining or maintaining the necessary regulatory approvals which are subject to change. According to Starlink, the ‘registered address’ mentioned above is only for tax and billing purposes. So if you originally ordered Roam in Mexico, but stay in Canada for more than 2 months, the address on your Starlink account could update to Canada for tax and billing purposes. If the new country has a higher subscription cost, you may see your monthly bill increase.

The branding from Starlink RV to Starlink Roam came as a surprise to me and most Starlink fans. But after digging through the details and writing this article, I already feel confident that it was a smart move. Unlike most other internet service providers, SpaceX does not send a professional to complete the product setup for their customers. This means that your home or business will receive a Starlink kit that will need someone else to install and connect the equipment.
With Starlink being so popular, a lot of people are still sitting on the fence when it comes to installing Starlink themselves. While those who have the right tools, skills and a DIY mindset often install the hardware themselves, not everyone is comfortable with handling such complex equipment or, in many cases, working at heights. What can I expect during the installation process**
As many in the North are already aware, Starlink is ideal for places without access to terrestrial fibre. Because of this, many campers, cottagers and other people living in remote locations have chosen SpaceX as their internet service provider by default – although that’s not to say some folks, be they residential or commercial customers, don’t prefer using satellite-based technology in town as well.
If you choose Starlink, it’s a smart idea to think about everything that goes into the installation process. Because our region is home to so many trees, it’s likely that your dish will have to be mounted outside and up high, usually on top of or along the edge of your roof. To help see this process through, SpaceX offers a range of different mounts sold separately on their website – some common types include J-mounts, non-penetrating roof mounts, and volcano mounts.
In addition to fixing the dish outside, its cables will also have to be routed toward your modem on the inside of your home or office. This means that in addition to the likelihood of dealing with heights, whoever is handling the setup will also have to drill into your building to complete the installation process. Long story short, you will need a series of power tools, construction supplies and technical knowledge to get the job done.
That’s a lot to consider. Is there anything else I should know**
Unfortunately, yes – there are several other factors that could complicate your Starlink installation. First of all, as the case pretty much anywhere in Canada, any outdoor job is subject to inclement weather. Year round, when you’re working up high, you’re likely to experience windy conditions that could complicate the setup and even put your safety at risk – and in the wintertime especially, freezing temperatures and ice buildup can turn any Northern setup south real fast.
Furthermore, if you’ve already been relying on other kinds of satellite-based internet services, chances are your home or cabin may already be covered in a handful of dishes pointed at the sky. If this is the case, your Starlink installation may become increasingly complicated, especially if all the space for a signal vantage point is already taken up (not to mention the possible abundance of cables).

Before we begin
When we arrive at your home, we’ll discuss the scope of work to ensure that the services you purchased meet your needs and expectations. If they don’t, we’ll recommend solutions. To ensure that installation can take place, we’ll verify that the location of the antenna will have a clear, unobstructed signal path to the northern sky (i.e., no trees, tree branches, buildings or other objects above the antenna).

Delivering to your home
We’ll securely deliver your new Starlink system to your home.

Connecting your new system
We’ll mount and assemble your new equipment, connect the Starlink cable to the included router inside the house through an exterior wall (or siding) and connect up to two devices.

Testing and demonstrating
We’ll assist you in downloading the Starlink app and creating a Starlink account through your mobile device. We’ll set up as many as two existing network devices, update the device’s (or devices’) firmware and guide you through any necessary user account setup and configuration. We’ll also demonstrate how to update these credentials and settings for future reference.

Cleaning up
It’s like we were never there. We’ll clean up the work area and remove all tools and supplies.
