Somalia Grants Operational License to Starlink, Expanding Internet Access Across the Nation

The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Somalia has officially granted an operational license to Starlink, enabling the satellite internet provider to commence services across the country. The announcement was made during a formal ceremony held in Mogadishu, attended by senior government officials and representatives from Starlink.

This marks Starlink’s 19th market entry in Africa, following its recent expansion into Niger in March 2025, further consolidating the company’s footprint on the continent.

Speaking at the event, Mustafa Yasin Sheik, Director General of the NCA, underscored the significance of the development: “Starlink’s entry into Somalia represents a significant milestone in our efforts to bridge the digital divide in our country. This partnership will especially benefit individuals and institutions in rural areas, where internet access has been minimal.”

The Minister of Communications and Technology, H.E. Mohamed Mo’allim, reaffirmed the government’s support: “We welcome Starlink’s entry to Somalia. This initiative aligns with our vision to deliver affordable and accessible internet services to all Somalis, regardless of where they live.”

Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite network is expected to enhance nationwide internet coverage and support digital inclusion, particularly in remote and underserved regions. The service is anticipated to boost connectivity for critical sectors such as education, healthcare, disaster response, and small business operations, contributing to Somalia’s broader digital transformation agenda.
